Panlongshan Great Wall (蟠龙山长城)
Panlongshan Great Wall is a scenic and relatively quiet section of the Great Wall located near Gubeikou in Beijing’s Miyun District. Its name, meaning “Coiling Dragon Mountain,” comes from the way the wall winds gracefully along the mountain ridges. This section offers a balance between history, beautiful scenery, and moderate hiking, making it popular with photographers and experienced walkers.
Highlights
🏯 Well-preserved Ming Dynasty watchtowers.
🌄 Panoramic mountain views with fewer visitors.
🥾 Moderate hiking suitable for active travelers.
📸 Excellent location for sunrise, sunset, and autumn photography.
🌿 Peaceful atmosphere compared with Badaling and Mutianyu.
History
Panlongshan was built during the Ming Dynasty (1368–1644) as part of the defensive system protecting the northern approaches to Beijing. Together with nearby Gubeikou, it played an important role in guarding one of the empire’s most strategic mountain passes.
