Restored watchtowers, dense forest and a cable car for effortless access. The most photogenic section of the Wall — and the one we recommend for a first visit.
Mutianyu is the section most travellers picture when they think of the Great Wall — sweeping stone ramparts along a forested ridge, twenty-two watchtowers restored in the Ming dynasty style, and far fewer crowds than Badaling.
Your driver will collect you from your hotel lobby, take the Jingcheng Expressway north, and deliver you to the Mutianyu gate in roughly ninety minutes. From there, a shuttle bus and cable car will bring you to the ridge itself. We recommend arriving before ten in the morning.
When choosing a destination for your backpacking trip, it is important to consider the level of difficulty of the trail and the weather conditions. Some popular backpacking destinations include national parks, wilderness areas, and mountain ranges. It is also important to obtain any necessary permits and to be aware of any regulations or rules for the area you plan to visit.
