Gubeikou Great Wall (古北口长城)

Gubeikou Great Wall is one of the oldest and most authentic sections of the Great Wall near Beijing. Unlike heavily restored sections such as Mutianyu and Badaling, much of Gubeikou remains in its original condition, making it a favorite destination for hikers, photographers, and history enthusiasts.

History

Gubeikou has long been one of the most important strategic passes protecting Beijing from northern invasions. The current wall was mainly rebuilt during the Ming Dynasty (1368–1644), although earlier fortifications date back to the Northern Qi Dynasty (550–577). Numerous battles were fought here because of its strategic position.

The route between Gubeikou and the adjacent Jinshanling Great Wall is regarded as one of the finest Great Wall hikes near Beijing. Note that access policies between sections can change, so it’s worth checking current visitor information before planning this trek.
